High blood pressure or hypertension means blood pressure above 120/80 mm Hg. Risk of having hypertension increases with age, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, pregnancy, bad dietary habits, and high level of cholesterol in the blood.

Once diagnosed with Hypertension your physician will prescribe you some anti-hypertensive medications. Your medication is usually in the form of tablets containing single or more anti-hypertensive drugs. Each has a different mechanism of action and acts in its own way to lower your blood pressure.

Types of Anti-Hypertensive Drugs :

Your antihypertensive medication may contain a single or more types of antihypertensive drugs. Those can be

  1. ACE inhibitors like captopril, lisinopril, enalapril etc.
  2. ARBs like valsartan, telmisartan, losartan
  3. Diuretics like furosemide, thiazide, spironolactone
  4. calcium channel blockers like amlodipine, nifedipine, diltiazem

Effect of anti-hypertensive medication on your body:

The anti-hypertensive medication causes dilation of blood vessels, that is the lumen of the vessel gets wider, so the pressure of blood inside your vessel is decreased. In addition, these medications also remove water and electrolytes from the blood in the kidney, decreasing the volume of blood in normal ranges and thus lowering the blood pressure.

How does Blood pressure medication causes frequent Urination?

Your Blood Pressure medication may contain a diuretic which has a primary action of diuresis, which means urine formation.

Urine is formed when blood flows through the kidneys and gets filtered. Diuretic increases the permeability to water and electrolytes in your kidney thus causing more urine formation and therefore, you notice increased urinary frequency after taking your blood pressure medication.

It is recommended to take your blood pressure pill in the morning. So if you need to pee frequently, your sleep at night won’t be interrupted.
